Oral health is a fundamental part of overall well-being, yet many individuals face significant challenges in accessing quality dental care. At Penn Dental Medicine’s Care Center for Persons with Disabilities, opened in 2021, we are dedicated to breaking down these barriers by fostering a more inclusive approach to dentistry—one that ensures all patients receive the care they need, regardless of physical, cognitive, or medical challenges. Our mission is to ensure access to care for thousands of adults with disabilities who urgently require oral health care. The Center ensures that every Penn dental student graduates with an understanding of how to competently and compassionately treat patients with all types of disabilities – cognitive, developmental, disease or injury related.

 

We invite you to learn how oral health for persons with disabilities can be enhanced through community partnerships, collaboration with teachers, health providers outside of dentistry, colleagues in social services, and even family members. Delegates will learn more about the barriers to good oral health and the consequences of neglect of this important dimension and could be of particular interest to people who work with low resourced communities that have a scarcity of dentists and/or dental care. The role that teledentistry can play in the development of personalized care delivery will be presented. Participants will have opportunity to learn about the delivery of individualized oral hygiene care and gain hands-on practice in the application of fluoride varnish and silver diamine fluoride and their role in disease prevention.

A Day in the Life of Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

Individuals experiencing homelessness are faced with tremendous challenges, and often, the most difficult challenge is self-advocating to be seen and heard by their neighbors and people in the community. The stigma they encounter and being overlooked by  people in their communities often creates the most stress and trauma.   Each day presents its challenges, but the most critical is finding the will to fight for another day and stay alive. This is what our unhoused friends and clients do each day.   Waking up early, often in the woods, under the freeway, or on the sidewalk, the first thought is usually about getting something to eat!   As they begin the journey of survival, their day may involve searching for food, waiting in line for services, or meeting with their case manager for assistance in navigating the complex social service systems.   As night falls, the challenge of finding a safe place to sleep begins again. With only one emergency homeless shelter in Bucks County, many individuals must wait on the streets for weeks and even months. Despite these challenges, many homeless individuals  show up each day smiling, holding onto the hope that securing a stable place to live will soon come!   Homelessness is not just a lack of shelter but a complex experience shaped by circumstances beyond a single day. Understanding this struggle can help foster empathy, reduce trauma, and inspire more action toward meaningful solutions.   Join Family Service and its program staff from Street Medicine, Housing First- Blended Case Management, and Emergency Homeless Shelter to hear firsthand accounts of how unhoused friends and clients navigate their days on the streets in their journey toward  stable housing.

A Woman’s Place

Please join us at our administrative office in Doylestown, PA for an Education Program from Rachele Daniels, our Medical Educator, on the services provided at AWP, the dynamics of Domestic Violence, and health impacts of Domestic Violence. Next, we will be sorting and organizing our pantry, which supplies essential items to our clients, such as toiletries, cleaning supplies and diapers. Tasks will include labeling and weighing, reshelving and discarding. (Climbing stairs and carrying up to 30 pounds required).

Founded in 1976, A Woman’s Place (AWP) is the only domestic violence community benefit organization in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. AWP provides a full range of programs and services to individuals experiencing domestic violence, their children, and the community. All of our programs, services and resources are free and available to anyone in Bucks County experiencing domestic violence.

Ocugen: Gene Therapy to Cure Blindness Diseases

Ocugen is a pioneering biotechnology leader in ophthalmology gene therapies. During the visit to Ocugen you will learn more about the Company’s novel modifier gene therapy platform to address major blindness diseases affecting millions across the globe. Woods System of Care: Integrated Care Model

Woods System of Care offers participants a tour around the Woods Services property in Langhorne, PA, which is home to 475 residents. Woods Services is an affiliate of the Woods System of Care. This tour will provide insight into some of the innovative programs that the Woods System of Care has implemented to improve client care and health outcomes. Conference participants will visit the Medical Center at Woods, Penn Dental Medicine at Woods, the Center for Behavioral Health, and the recreation team, which includes a barn and nature trail.

* The Medical Center is an on-site center that provides comprehensive medical care for patients with disabilities.
* Woods has partnered with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine—one of the leading dental schools in the United States—to provide access to dentists for kids with autism and other special needs, and for adults with disabilities.
* The Center for Behavioral Health specializes in delivering comprehensive behavioral healthcare that draws on a wide range of therapies, interventions, and support systems to provide thorough assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and follow-up care.
* The recreation team visit includes a visit to our barn, which is home to our many farm animals, as well as a walk down the nature trail, where residents enjoy to connect with nature and their environment.

Beechwood NeuroRehab: Comprehensive Care After Brain Injury

This will be an immersive, hands-on experience as attendees spend a few hours walking in the shoes of individuals with brain injuries and explore the challenges and the triumphs of these individuals as they continue to adapt to their lives with a new and different set of abilities.

Beechwood NeuroRehab is a program that provides individuals with skilled rehabilitation across many stages of their lives. Structured as a post-acute residential and outpatient program, Beechwood NeuroRehab offers occupational, physical, speech-language, neuropsychology, and cognitive rehabilitation therapies as well as structured day programming and residential services for individuals with brain injuries and other neurological conditions.

Most importantly, Beechwood NeuroRehab utilizes collaborative treatment plans within each participant’s individualized interdisciplinary team to provide them with a variety of interventions to improve their quality of life as this in turn fuels their motivation to remain connected with their lives.

During your visit, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in different aspects of these individuals’ lived experiences such as attending various therapies or joining individuals in their structured day program work units. One hour you may be learning to use equipment to treat physical disabilities such as hemiplegia or visual impairments, and the next you may be assisting individuals in the horticulture or culinary units to ensure they fulfill their work-ordered day. Through our holistic treatment approach focusing on treating the whole person at each stage of their life as they recover and redefine their lives post-injury, we are supporting some of the following areas:

· Hemiplegia with and without spasticity

· Visual impairments

· Balance

· Executive and cognitive functioning

· Work related training

· Mental health
